The City of Play were approached by Depot Arts to present a fun and engaging introduction to architecture & engineering workshop as part of the local A Shed Load of Science event in Possil Park, Glasgow.
We provided a workshop that challenged the local children's ingenuity by testing their understanding of structure through building towering skyscrapers constructed of spaghetti, jelly babies and marshmallows. The tower's strength and stability were designed and constructed in order to support their precious cargo...a giant double yolk egg!
The second activity provided a platform to test their ideas at a larger scale through constructing bamboo bridges. Typical garden bamboo canes and electrical tape were used to construct the bridges, of which had to be constructed in such a way to share the load of the crossing traffic.
Given the nature of the activities we believed we inspired an interest in Architecture and Engineering amongst our participants, giving them a greater level of understanding of how forms are constructed.
