The City of Play were commissioned to engage the local community in a participative design exercise to explore and test ideas for the Murrayburn and Hailesland Community Park, The Green Way in Wester Hailes. The ambition was to implement an exceptional yet achievable plan for the affordance of play.

Our approach was to consult and engage the local community (in particular children and young people) through site analysis, design and prototyping. While conducting analysis, we undertook a ‘child-led’ approach; mapping the site in relation to their positive and negative response to the sensory stimulus throughout the park, while a community chalkboard was installed to prompt discussions and boost engagement/awareness from the wider community.

Creative environmental artworks as well as  prototyping sessions provided the local community the platform to design, implement and test ideas for the appropriate use of the space. The resulting masterplan accommodates provision for an adventure playground, growing space and a series of small scale artistic interventions.
