ELEVATE

The City of Play are privileged to be part of an international fellowship of 12 creative practitioners and academics focused on ‘Re-imagining Childhood Play’. The Fellows, selected from over 80 applicants from across the globe, actively collaborate and share best practice on a regular basis. In February 2015, the fellows attended a week long Innovation Camp in Tokyo and at the Yamaguchi Centre for Arts and Media; taking in the best Japan had to offer in play on a ‘Play Safari’ and collaboratively developing their ideas and practices.

The City of Play tested their ethos of making everyday spaces playable by minimally adapting the interior of YCAM and outside in the wider with ‘playfinding routes’ and points of interest. We used affordable materials such as coloured duct tape to create visual links between the inside of the building and outside. This intervention allowed users to engage more creatively and memorably with the architecture while promoting social and physical activity
