The City of Play were approached by Depot Arts to design and build a 'teepee' for their much anticipated North West Glasgow Arts Trail event.
A temporary pavilion constructed of bamboo was installed onsite at the Maryhill locks. The pavilion was cheaply and simply constructed using straight lengths of bamboo with cable tie connections to form a hyperbolic paraboloid (pringle shape) to demonstrate the possibilities of simple structures.
Workshop activities included tower building using spaghetti and jelly babies, allowing participants to explore and understand the principles of simple structures in a fun and creative way. Another activity was using typical garden bamboo canes and electrical tape giving participants the ability to test their ideas at a large scale and the opportunity to more closely replicate the construction of our pavilion.
Given the nature of the activities we believed we inspired an interest in Architecture and Engineering amongst our participants, giving them a greater level of understanding of how forms are constructed.
